Mobile Music Academy’s Unique, Fun and Easy Colour-Coded Method for Learning Music

Mobile Music Academy has developed the ‘Play in Colour’ method: a colour-coded system to help children and beginner musicians of all ages understand music easily.

Notes in colour: beginner music lessons and group music classes for kids

This fun, accessible and memorable approach provides visual support in the form of colour coded stickers on the fretboard or keyboard of an instrument. Each note has a corresponding colour and an animal.

Originally created to facilitate group lessons for young students, the Play in Colour method focuses on communicating the instructions in an intuitive manner, giving the student the confidence to perform the required actions.

The Colour Stickers allow for intuitive learning

Basic music theory and note reading

The music theory is presented through colour-coded diagrams and cartoon animal characters, alongside games that engage other aspects of cognition such as mathematics and pattern recognition.

The technical work is presented through a board game where the students draw challenge cards and have to perform specific sounds or musical patterns on their instruments.

This is a fun way to motivate students to learn the required skills using bitesize visual challenges that are easy to remember. The Play in Colour method also encourages more interaction between students as well as between student and teacher.

Weaving the rainbow, growing the skill - The Mobile Music Academy Ninja Syllabus

The Mobile Music Academy Ninja Syllabus is a series of books that facilitate the learning and practicing process. Filled with basic exercises, songs, and musical pieces, each book in the range represents a ‘belt’ - as levels are represented in Karate. As with karate, each belt (or book) is a different colour, and if students manage to master the first one, they can move on to the next, and so forth.

The first book or belt in the series is the White Belt, for children and/or beginners. The second is the Yellow, etc. Students will find plenty of variety, games, and learning methods represented. The syllabus is available for Ukulele, Piano, Drums, Guitar and Bass.

The story behind the 'Play In Colour' Method

Laughing Abe, Mobile Music Academy’s amazing ukulele, guitar and double bass teacher, and one of the founding members, created the 'Play in Colour' Method, which was developed alongside fellow MMA teammates Sebastian (the owner/CEO/drum master) & Cal (CCO).

Did you know that Abe is actually colourblind?! BUT he can still tell which colours are which - and realised the power of combining colours and music! He even gave a Ted-X talk about it!

Learning styles = Learning miles: Learning styles in Music Education

People have diverse learning styles with the predominant style being visual, and whether you are a child or an adult, you will be surprised how easily your mind will latch onto ideas when they’re represented through pictures and colours.

Stories also play a big role in learning for many children and adults as they help to contextualise learnt information, leading to better retention.

Bringing these together through colour coding, animals, stories and games, we have the power to make music lessons an exciting, creative space for all kinds of minds and musicians.
